Plan your retirement with confidence

This calculator projects how your 401(k) and other retirement savings could grow between now and your target retirement age. It accounts for your own contributions, your employer's match, and compound investment growth — then estimates the annual income those savings could support using the widely-cited 4% withdrawal rule.

Capture your full employer match first

If your employer matches contributions, that match is an instant 100% return on the matched portion. Before paying down low-interest debt or investing elsewhere, contribute at least enough to get the entire match. The calculator warns you if your contribution rate is below the match threshold.

Estimates for educational purposes only — not financial advice. Projections ignore inflation, taxes, fees, and contribution limits, which materially affect real outcomes. Consult a financial advisor.

Frequently asked questions

How much will I have at retirement?

Your projected balance depends on your current savings, how much you and your employer contribute each year, your investment return, and how many years you have until retirement. This calculator compounds all of these monthly to estimate your balance at your target age.

What is an employer 401(k) match?

Many employers match a percentage of your salary that you contribute to your 401(k) — for example, matching up to 4%. It's essentially free money, so contributing at least enough to capture the full match is one of the best returns available.

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule is a common rule of thumb suggesting you can withdraw about 4% of your retirement balance in the first year (adjusted for inflation thereafter) with a high chance your savings last 30 years. We use it to estimate your potential annual retirement income.

What return rate is realistic?

A diversified retirement portfolio has historically returned around 7% per year after inflation over long periods, though returns vary widely year to year. Conservative planners often use 5–6% to be safe.
